It looks amazing on Pinterest.
Crystal chandelier. Freestanding tub. Candle vibes. Luxury hotel feel.
But here’s the problem:
Electrical code doesn’t care about aesthetics.
And in most cases…🚫 You cannot install a chandelier over a bathtub.
What Does the Electrical Code Actually Say?
According to the National Electrical Code (NEC):
No parts of a cord-connected or chain-hung fixture can be located within a zone directly over a bathtub.
The restricted zone extends 3 feet horizontally and 8 feet vertically from the top rim of the tub.
Fixtures inside that zone must be rated for damp or wet locations (depending on exposure).
Most chandeliers:
❌ Are not damp-rated
❌ Hang too low
❌ Are chain-supported
❌ Are reachable from the tub
That’s where it becomes a serious safety issue.
Why Is It Not Allowed?
Let’s break it down simply.
You are:
Wet
Barefoot
In a conductive environment
Surrounded by plumbing
Now imagine: A metal chandelier Moisture in the air
A loose connection Or someone reaching up to adjust a bulb
That’s how accidents happen.
The rule exists to prevent shock and electrocution risk.
“But I See It All Over Instagram…”
Yes.
You also see:
Fire pits under wooden decks
TVs mounted above fireplaces with no clearance
Shower niches with no waterproofing
Social media is not code enforcement.
Just because you saw it in a staged photo doesn’t mean it passed inspection.
What Are Your Options Instead?
If you want luxury lighting near a tub, here’s what actually works:
✔️ Recessed lighting rated for damp/wet locations
✔️ Ceiling-mounted flush fixtures rated for damp locations
✔️ Wall sconces placed outside the restricted zone
✔️ LED indirect lighting for ambiance
You can still get the “spa feel” —without risking a code violation.
What I See in Real Homes (Mercer County Edition)
In older homes (especially 80s–90s builds), I often see:
Fixtures installed too low
No GFCI protection nearby
Improper bonding or grounding
Decorative lighting added without electrical upgrades
It might look high-end…
But behind the drywall, it’s 1988 wiring.
When we remodel bathrooms, we check:
✔️ Fixture clearance
✔️ Electrical zoning
✔️ GFCI protection
✔️ Dedicated circuits
✔️ Proper grounding
Because remodeling isn’t just finishes.
It’s safety.
The Bigger Picture
There’s a difference between:
Surface remodeling and Code-compliant remodeling
One is Instagram-ready. The other is inspection-ready.
Only one protects your family long-term.
Final Thoughts
Can you technically hang a chandelier over a tub?
In most real-world residential scenarios?
No.
And if someone tells you “it’s fine,” make sure they’re also ready to stand next to you during inspection.
